Are there any ideas for making a cross tattoo a little more exciting if the basic design is just 2 rectangles?

I feel like two rectangles making up a (christian) cross may be too simple, but I don't want anything elaborate.
so do you have any ideas for bringing such a cross come to life with just a minor revision/addition?

Just some shading and colour can make a tattoo more interesting to look at. You could get it shades of light yellow or brown. You could also get a bright snake winding itself around the cross.
